Tiny Snips
TS #14 – That’s The ONE!
Amazon recently introduced its palm-scanning payment system to a Whole Foods store. It is one of the two advanced payment options Amazon has been successfully testing, other being the “Just Walk Out” technology, wherein the customers can shop for products and literally just walk out of the store. When a shopper takes something off the shelf, it’s added to their virtual cart. After they leave the store, they’re charged for their purchases.
The One works differently. Initially, the customer is supposed to insert their credit card into the kiosk and link it with their palm print. Thereafter, every time they make a purchase, they can pay for their purchase by simply holding their hand over the kiosk.
TS #15 – Terminator in Mosquitoes?
A Company called Oxitec is all set to release a genetically-modified batch of mosquitoes in the US state of Florida this spring.
Why?
There has been a rising case of mosquito-borne – potentially deadly – diseases over the past decade.
These are mostly transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
They have become increasingly resistant to insecticides forcing scientists to look for other measures to control them.
This batch of mosquitoes – The OX5034 – are all males(unlike females, doesn’t bite) and are programmed with a gene that will lead to the female offspring’s produced to die in their early larval stages, thus containing the population of disease transmitting variant. Basically Terminator in Mosquitoes!
TS #8 – The Indian Trifecta for Tesla
Tesla is planning to open its showrooms in 3 Indian cities :-
New Delhi – The National Capital and second most populated city.
Mumbai – The Financial hub and the most populous city. Also home to the highest number of millionaires and billionaires.
Bengaluru – Tech hub of the country. Rumored to be the place where Tesla is planning to set up a manufacturing unit.
Snip Threads
A Pain in the ADS!
The Why Part
Apple’s new App Tracking Transparency feature, rolled out in their latest iOS update, asks users whether they would like to be tracked across apps. TBH, in general, people wouldn’t mind much. BUT, if that is put into words and asked to them to their face with a “Ask App not to Track” option, with a CAPITAL “T“(like the one below), people would most likely opt out.
The Joke Valued In Billions!
The What now?
The popular cryptocurrency called Dogecoin aka the meme coin has been in the news for a while thanks to its “CEO by popular social media vote” Elon Musk. In 2020 it got Musk’s attention and thereafter, its value has been soaring whenever he mentions it. Like this tweet, after which it rose about twice in the week that followed –
